HOW TO MEASURE
Measuring Cabinets for Kitchen & Bath
Measuring your kitchen for new cabinets might seem tricky, but with a few simple steps, we can make it easy and even fun! Let’s walk through the process together.
Step 1: Sketch Your Kitchen or Bathroom
First, draw a rough layout of your space. No need to be an artist—just a simple sketch showing the walls, windows, doors, and existing cabinets is enough. This will help us see how everything fits together.
Step 2: Mark Windows, Doors, and Openings
On your sketch, mark where all the doors and windows are. Be sure to include trim, as that can affect cabinet placement. Also, note any pass-throughs, archways, or other open spaces.
Step 3: Measure the Walls
Now, grab your measuring tape and start measuring each wall. Write down the width of each wall from one corner to another. If there’s a window or a door, measure from the corner to the edge of the trim, then from trim to trim across the window or door, and finally from the other edge of the trim to the next corner.
Step 4: Measure Ceiling Height
Ceiling height matters, especially for tall cabinets! Measure from the floor to the ceiling in multiple places, as some ceilings are not perfectly even. If you have crown molding, measure from the floor to the bottom of the molding and note that separately.
Step 5: Locate Existing Cabinets and Appliances
If you’re keeping your current layout, mark where your existing cabinets, appliances, and sinks are. For appliances, measure their width, height, and depth. If you’re planning a new layout, indicate where you’d like things to go.
Step 6: Measure Countertop Depth
For base cabinets, the depth of your countertops is important. Standard countertops are usually about 25 inches deep, but measuring ensures everything lines up properly.
Step 7: Check for Special Features
Are there any pipes, vents, or electrical outlets that might affect cabinet placement? Mark those on your drawing so we can design around them.
Step 8: Take Photos
Pictures help a lot! Snap a few clear photos of your kitchen or bathroom from different angles. This gives us a better idea of the space and helps ensure a smooth design process.
